BEAUNE, BURGUNDY

Beaune is a beautiful walled medieval city in Burgundy, the main activity of which has been the wine trade, since time immemorial.  The second most visited city in France, with approximately 1.5m visitors annually.  It is 26km, or just over half an hour's drive from Les Deux Chevres, following the Route des Grands Crus through the wine villages.

The Hospices de Beaune was a hospital built in the 15c by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Dukes of Burgundy.  It was a generous gesture for the poor of the region, which at the time was beset by famine and plague.  The first nurses came from Bruges, then part of Burgundy.   One of the main cuves at the annual wine sale is called 'Dame de Flandres' in recognition of their early contribution.  The building operated as a working hospital until the 1930's, and is now set out superbly as a museum, with all the gruesome medical instruments on display that would have been used in those early years.  It makes a wonderful visit, and should not be missed.
