Élizabeth Vigée Le Brun was born in April 1755, the daughter of an artist father and hairdresser mother. By her early teens she was painting portraits professionally, and later patronised by Louise de Bourbon, the wife of the Duc d'Orleans. In 1774 she was made a member of the Académie Francaise. She left a legacy of some 600 portraits and 200 landscapes, many of which feature in world famous collections. She survived the Revolution, and died in Paris in 1842 at the age of 86.
